EurocomItalia ensures that all its products comply with the most stringent national and European regulations regarding safety, quality and sustainability. The company operates in full compliance with specific technical standards for each product category, from urban furniture to playgrounds, from public lighting to street elements.
Playground Standards: Safety and Certification
UNI EN 1176 - Safety of Playground Equipment
The UNI EN 1176 standard represents the European reference standard for the safety of playground equipment for public use. All playgrounds manufactured by EurocomItalia are certified according to this standard, ensuring maximum protection for children during play activities.
Standard Objectives
The purpose of the standard is to establish the general safety requirements for playground equipment, for both individual and collective use by children. These requirements, when correctly applied, protect children from possible hazards that they may be unable to foresee.
Structure of UNI EN 1176 Standard
The standard is divided into 7 parts, each dedicated to specific types of equipment and safety aspects:
- EN 1176-1: General safety requirements and test methods for all equipment
- EN 1176-2: Specific requirements for swings
- EN 1176-3: Specific requirements for slides
- EN 1176-4: Specific requirements for cableways
- EN 1176-5: Specific requirements for carousels
- EN 1176-6: Specific requirements for rocking equipment
- EN 1176-7: Guide for installation, inspection, maintenance and operation
- EN 1176-11: Requirements for three-dimensional climbing nets
Main Safety Requirements
The UNI EN 1176 standard identifies two types of main hazards to which users may be exposed:
- Falls from height: the standard requires the presence of railings, parapets and handrails with specific dimensions to prevent falls
- Entrapment: five types of entrapment are defined and measures to avoid them (head, neck, fingers, feet, body)
Materials and Construction
Materials must be manufactured according to best practices, with particular attention to:
- Absence of toxic substances in surface coatings
- Non-toxic treated wood that does not splinter or flake
- Water drainage to prevent pooling
- Material integrity protection when in contact with the ground
- Rounded edges with a radius of at least 20mm
- Non-removable closures without tools
Safety Zones and Spaces
The standard precisely defines the minimum safety spaces:
- Free space: includes the space occupied by the equipment, free space and fall space
- Fall space: minimum 1.5 meters from the equipment base (1000mm for some equipment)
- Free fall height: not greater than 3 meters
- Impact-absorbing surfacing: minimum 30 cm of gravel, paving or certified impact-absorbing material
- No overlap: free spaces or fall spaces must not overlap
- Access paths: must not cross the fall space
UNI EN 1177 - Impact Attenuation Surface Coverings
The UNI EN 1177 standard defines requirements for safety surfacing in play areas, specifying test methods for determining impact attenuation. This standard establishes criteria for the design, installation and maintenance of surfaces that must reduce the risk of injury in case of falls from specific heights.
UNI 11123 - Guide for Playground Design
This standard provides design guidelines for outdoor parks and play areas, considering all environmental factors such as ground type, available space, accessibility and integration with the surrounding environment.

Playground Maintenance: Obligations and Responsibilities
Maintenance Plan According to UNI EN 1176-7
The UNI EN 1176-7 standard establishes that playground equipment must be subject to routine and extraordinary maintenance at the purchaser's expense to ensure operating conditions and safety over time.
Types of Inspection
The owner or manager of the area is solely responsible for the service and must ensure the execution of three types of inspections:
- Routine visual inspection: identifies obvious hazards resulting from vandalism, wear or weather effects (frequency: weekly or after significant weather events)
- Operational inspection: checks the stability of various equipment and verifies functionality (frequency: every 1-3 months)
- Annual main inspection: thorough verification of maintenance status, functionality and safety, to be performed by qualified technicians expert in EN 1176 standards
Routine and Corrective Maintenance
- Routine maintenance: takes into account local conditions and manufacturer's instructions
- Corrective/extraordinary maintenance: necessary to correct safety issues or restore functionality after vandalism or damage
Documentation and Archiving
The standard requires archiving of all documentation regarding periodic inspection interventions, which may also occur in electronic format.
Responsibilities and Compliance
In case of accidents, responsibilities may be attributed to:
- Manufacturer, importer or distributor: if equipment does not originally meet requirements
- Installer: for installation errors
- Manager: for maintenance or inspection deficiencies
The UNI EN 1176 standard, developed by manufacturers, designers, major buyers, managers and consumer representatives, constitutes a valid legal reference to verify equipment compliance in case of disputes or accidents.
